93 Islands of Scotland

Update on Doug Kerr’s, 93 Islands of Scotland Challenge.

As many of you will be aware, veteran befriender Doug Kerr is currently embarking on a  unique Scottish island hop, visiting all 93 of our inhabitated islands in order to climb their highest peak. As well as providing a personal challenge, Doug is also hoping that the three year long adventure will raise a substantial amount of money for three of his favourite charities – Mary’s MealsRotary International and Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project.

Doug is at Isle of Shuna.

World Stone Skimming Championships at Easdale + Shuna/Seil/Luing – late Sept.

Ten of us – Isla & I, David & Francis Henderson and 3 old Agric Uni friends and wives -David & Allison Houston, Norrie & Trish Niven and Martin & Maggie Reece assembled at Melfort Village near Oban.  After a great meal prepared by our good ladies and copious amounts of drink (reminiscent of our Uni days), we put the world to rights.
Next day to Shuna-very wet, but dry in ‘Lord of the Isles’ pub where barmaid Shona tried to keep us in order!

Visited Arduaine garden and then after some more drinks back to ‘Lord of the Isles’ for our evening meal with Shona still trying to keep us in order
Next day the weather was superb, see pictures, and stopped at ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ on way to Seil Did hill but found a grumpy farmer who was for sending us back over the hill rather than letting us through his steading, until he saw how decrepit some of us were!

Another fine lunch at the Oyster Inn-again a cheery barmaid (recurring theme?)
Luing next-lovely island but did not have long enough-last ferry at 6pm and then yet more eating and drinking. However Isla& I will return with our electric bikes (yes we have joined the revolution!) to do what Martin & Maggie did.

You can follow Doug’s progress on www.93islandsofscotland.wordpress.com  Meanwhile, he would be delighted if anyone would like to join him on any of the walks.  If you are interested please contact him by email on douglas.kerr@care4free.net
