Life of a Befriender

Katia
How long have you been a befriender?
I have been a befriender for about four months.
Why did you decide to become involved?
I wanted to offer the kind of support I would have appreciated as a young person—like a big sister to lean on. At the same time, I was also looking to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to do something new.
What have you most enjoyed about spending time with your young person?
I have most enjoyed getting to know my young person and seeing the world through their eyes. In the end, it didn’t really matter what we did. Each activity was a gateway to new conversations. As someone who grew up in France, I also enjoyed learning about what it’s like to grow up in Dumfries.
What benefits have you experienced personally through your befriending role?
Befriending has brought so much joy and fun into my week, whether we are trying a new activity or simply chatting about life. On a personal level, it’s been a chance for to reconnect with my younger self and helped me improve my confidence. There have been moments when I wasn’t sure if I was saying or doing the ‘right’ thing, but I learned to trust myself and focus on being present. It’s made me realise how powerful being fully present for someone can be.
What would you say to someone who may be interested in joining our team?
If you’re even slightly considering it, go for it! I know it might seem scary, but you will get plenty of support from the team, so you won’t feel alone.
Befriending is an amazing opportunity to form a meaningful bond with a young person, which will leave a positive impact—not only on their life but on your own as well.
