As part of Volunteer Week celebrations, Third Sector D&G asked Gail Muir to share her thoughts on volunteering with us at D&G Befriending Project.

1. Name: Gail Muir

2. Organisation volunteering with and role:

Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project.     Role – Befriender.

3. Length of time you have volunteered in this role:

Nearly 10 years

4. What made you consider becoming a volunteer?

Had more time on my hands as my kids got older and wanted to try something different. Liked the idea of being able to share experiences with a young person and trying to make a difference.

5. What motivates you to continue volunteer?

Knowing what a difference a positive role model can make in a young person’s life.

6. What impact has volunteering had on your life?

It is keeping me young and active and giving me opportunities to meet new people frequently.

7. What skills have you brought to your role and what skills have you learned?

The most important skill I think, is just be yourself and be there for your young person. I have learned to try lots of new activities and embrace anything that comes my way.

8. What else should a volunteer bring to the role?

Enthusiasm and patience.

9.. What makes an organisation a great place to volunteer?

Teamwork, friendliness and a great support network.

10. What would you say to someone who is sitting on the fence about becoming a volunteer?

Go on, give it a try. You have nothing to lose. You might help make a huge difference to a vulnerable young person’s life AND get to make lots of new friends!
